CATALOGUE NOTE:
This wooden Kuba Kete mask originates from the Kete tribe and possesses distinct Kuba characteristics. It displays a charming patina representing its use over time, as well as a stunning polychromy that preserves the original pigmentation and showcases the intricate geometric patterns of the Kuba.

The Bushoong people refer to this masks as “Pwoom Itok”, which are unique to the region and have variations within the Kuba sub-groups. While there are folk tales that explain the mask’s resemblance to a pygmy or a hydrocephalic, it actually shares similarities with other large masculine helmet masks found in the surrounding area.
