CATALOGUE NOTE:
A Bena Lulua power figure, with a dual finial extension from the head, the hairstyle a departure from characteristic Lulua statuary, standing on two lumpy feet, heavy hips and full rounded buttocks, arms carved in openwork, hands resting on a protruding abdomen. with an elongated columnar neck decorated in incised square patterns, rows of beaded necklace and waist beads from which is attached an apron/loin cloth. The long neck is surmounted by an irregular shaped bulging forehead. The whole figure is decorated in incised flowery and geometric motifs, and finished in exceptionally fine dark brown patina with areas of encrustation.
With its highly refined naturalism, its harmonious proportions, and its symmetrical scarification patterns, this power figure is the quintessential embodiment of the Lulua concept of beauty.
