CATALOGUE NOTE:
Baga D’mba figures, whether male or female, symbolize deities that held both positive and negative influences on the community’s life. These sculptures were kept in shrines located outside the villages and were connected to plant and human fertility. While they weren’t believed to house spirits, they acted as mediators between the spirits and the people. Offerings were placed at the shrines for the spirits, and the figures were highly revered in the belief that they could bring blessings and benefits from the spirits.
